Mathematics Mastery

John of Gaunt Infant and Nursery School

Maths

My child “loves maths and is really enjoying her maths in class”

“Thank you very much for the workshop you just put on for parents. I am really keen to start exploring maths in the environment with my son. Had it not been for you reaching out and sharing informing about how to talk about maths and what the important principles are in understanding number representations, I would not know how to support that learning as effectively so thank you for taking the time to share.”

Mathematics Mastery at John of Gaunt

At John of Gaunt our vision is for every child to enjoy and succeed in mathematics regardless of background or any barriers they may have.  We believe that our ‘abilities’ are never fixed or innate, but can be developed through practice, support, dedication and hard work.  We nurture a ‘growth mind-set’ at our school.

As a school, we teach maths through the Mathematics Mastery programme.  We started this programme in September 2020 and launched it in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 at that time.  The mastery approach enables all children to access the same curriculum content and, rather than children being extended with new learning, they are given opportunities to deepen their understanding with challenging and varied problems.

All year groups follow the key mastery principles, including accessing the same tasks (where possible) for all children, small step learning within daily maths lessons, maths meetings (at least three times a week) and interventions (where appropriate).  Our federated school, Bure Valley Junior School, are also following Mathematics Mastery which provides continuity between Reception, KS1 and KS2.

Maths Parent Packs and Workshops for Parents are designed to clearly show the methods pupils are being taught and can act as a reminder or guide for parents and carers who may be supporting their child with their maths learning out of school.

If you require more information about maths at our school, please take a look at 'Our Approach to Mathematics' document below or contact our Maths Lead who would be happy to answer any questions you may have:
